Advocacy

Our advocacy efforts include meeting with politicians, writing to Ministers and their departments and providing submissions to governments.

We raise issues through media releases, radio interviews, our Facebook page and website.

High membership and supporter numbers strengthens our advocacy efforts, giving a voice to all the animals and plants that comprise the marine environment and which are unable to speak for themselves.

You have FREE access to all of the NCMG resources, teaching and learning kits through our library. We always appreciate any change, so that we can continue to advocate, educate, inspire and create change… so we gratefully accept membership subscriptions or any donations to help us continue to share.

Protecting Eastern Blue Groper

Being one of the friendliest of fish, the iconic NSW marine emblem, the Eastern Blue Groper (Achoerodus viridis) is a key shallow reef inhabitant along the Great Southern Reef. Only now is their role in controlling urchin populations and reducing the spread of barrens being fully understood.

Save our Sanctuaries

Sanctuary Zones are are under threat and need our help NOW. The NSW Government has allowed fishing in sanctuary zones in the Batemans Marine Park. You must act NOW to reverse this decision. Our environment needs protection. A two-month consultation period is about to start.

Endangered Sharks

Since recovery plans, conservation advice and management strategies have been implemented for shark and ray species listed as threatened under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) there have been no measurable improvements in their status.

Urchin Barrens Project

Urchin barrens are a huge environmental problem on the NSW South coast. Fully half the shallow rocky reefs in our area are now degraded. We are part of a Working Group comprising various stakeholders that will look at how the urchin barrens problem can be dealt with in the Batemans Marine Park.

Beaches & Headlands

Australia Rock, Narooma

In 2018, the NSW Government announced the Batemans Bay Marine Park is among ten ocean beach & headland sites across four marine parks in NSW that have been rezoned to allow recreational line fishing. This decision effectively halves the length of the NSW coast with top-level environmental protection.
