Dr Jen Thompson remembers diving through beautiful kelp forest looking for Weedy Seadragons at Barunguba/Montague Island. That was over 30 years ago. 

Now so much of that incredible biodiversity has been lost as Long spined Sea Urchins have eaten the kelp, leaving urchin barrens.

NCMG president Dane Wilmott and James Caffery were very fortunate in receiving an invitation to be part of the recent National Centrostephanus (Long Spine Purple Sea Urchin) workshop and would like to thank all the NCMG members for their support and financial help in attending this event. This event served to consolidate a breadth of knowledge on this issue and to provide a much clearer picture of the management strategies needed to address the challenges to be faced in the future.

Our ocean has been doing a lot of heavy lifting, limiting the effects of climate change. Covering 70% of the earth’s surface, it has absorbed about half of our CO2 emissions and 90% of the heat we have produced since the Industrial Revolution. However, it is not the limitless sink for all our rubbish, toxins and heat that we have long believed.

Widespread phytoplankton blooms triggered by 2019–2020 Australian wildfires: The blooms sparked when ash from the fires blew far out into the iron-deficient Southern Pacific Ocean, where the influx of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and (most importantly) iron allowed an unprecedented bloom during what is usually a low production point in the season!
